Re: Acidophilus or Bifidobacterium Infantis - IBS

With reference to stool analysis and objective marker; if the analysis

indicates you have little or no growth then supplement with the appropriate

beneficial bacterium. Real world results from those suffering with IBS

would be most welcome.

Such stool analysis are costly, therefore, it may be cheaper to simply

supplement with one then the other. Then compare in a real world manner.

I may have misinterpreted the research, but as far as I am aware a

typical daily dose shown to be efficacious for the treatment of IBS

should supply about 8 to 10 billion live organisms/bacteria. Most

companies are currently selling products which contain lower amounts of

bifidobacterium infantis than specificied in the research (1 bllion bacteria not

10 billion?).

Proctor and Gamble a pharmaceutical company are currently promoting a

product called Align:

http://www.bifantis.com/find.shtml

http://www.aligngi.com/index.shtml

What Is Align?

Align is a natural supplement that helps promote a healthy, balanced

digestive system when taken daily. Align is an easy-to-swallow

capsule that you take just once a day, every day to help even out the

ups and downs of common digestive upsets such as diarrhea,

constipation, gas, bloating, or urgency. Align capsules contain

Bifantis™, a probiotic that has been clinically proven to improve

digestive balance.

How Does Align Work?

It is essential to have a proper balance of intestinal bacteria for

normal digestion. Align contains the dietary ingredient Bifantis, a

unique probiotic that delivers " good " bacteria to your digestive

system. Bifantis provides your body with the beneficial bacteria it

needs. This gives you a natural defense against occasional intestinal

imbalances and the roller coaster of digestive problems, such as

diarrhea or constipation. When your balance is out of line, Align

helps restore a healthy, natural digestive balance that keeps you at

your best.*

However:

" Each Align capsule contains approximately 1 X 10 to the ninth colony

forming units (CFU) of bacteria at the time of manufacture. This is

the same as 1 billion bacteria. "

Thanks for any assistance once again

You are correct concerning the low doses B. Infantis in

the usual combinations found in most pharmacies.

I had read the original research several years ago

after which I first researched the local pharmacies

and could not find a single formulation with the

appropriate concentration of B.Infantis..

I spoke with owner of a pharmacy next to my office

about this and he was able to find a supplier who

carried B. Infantis in the 8-10 billion range. He now

stocks this at my request. The cost is in the $30

range for a months supply.

I honestly do not know the name of the supplier but if

anyone is interested I can ask the pharmacist for the

name.

The phramacist orders it from Designs for Health

located in Connecticut USA- It is compound at his

request in powder form and contains 6.68 billion

bifidobacterium per 1/2 tsp.

You might consider contacting the pharmacist I use:

Beacon Pharmacy

340 North Main Street

Southington Ct.

06489

phone:

If you are interested I suggest you call and be very

specific and mention my name. Otherwise you may get

an off the self product which has considerably less

bifidobacterium infantis.

I hope this helps.

Another option would be to ask a local pharmacy to

have some forumlate for you.
