And I didn't look it up, but I don't know if Oxycodone is available alone.

I know that hydrocodone is not as my doctor prescribed it and had to change

it after the pharmacist informed him that it is not available.

It is available but, this is a problem. I think the press created the problem.

Pharmacies and such get robbed a lot for this drug, as it seems to be a drug of

choice druggies. Most doctors won't write scripts and most pharmacies that I

know of doesn't stock it. My husband has chronic pain and was using it for the

really tough time. Now he uses morphine.

A local doctor here (Pensacola FL) is serving a very long prison sentence for

dispensing it so doctors are very careful.

My sister has lung problems from asbestos. That is next to having lung cancer

and life expectancy is measured in months. The doctor is a specialist in that

field and she was never seeing him, just his assistant. When the assistant came

in to see her she asked why was she paying for a specialist and getting an

assistant, not even a doctor. Then she saw the doctor. That was her last apt.

and I don't know just what she will do now but if she can find another

specialist she will probably change if she doesn't continue to see the doctor.

You know, I don't think it comes just by itself. Although

I'm pretty

sure there's a version that has Ibuprofen, too...

It's bad enough to have to beg for pain meds, but it seems that I have

to beg for my regular RA meds. I left my last rheumy because he didn't

have time to write me new prescriptions and said for my pharmacy to

call. They called, and I called, for two weeks and never did get

prescriptions.

I get my Enbrel delivered to me, a three-month supply each time. I

assumed that when my new rheumy's nurse called in a prescription three

months ago that I would have at least one refill. Well, I didn't. I've

been trying for three days now to get them to call in a new

prescription, and so far they haven't. I need it next week.

I have a bunch of red tape to get the Enbrel, anyway. My insurance

company farms out their prescription service to Medco. Medco uses a

special pharmacy for meds like Enbrel. Yet another company has to ship

the meds. So each time I get it, I have to go round and round with all

of these companies, waiting on hold first for 15-20 minutes before I

even get to speak to anyone. And they never can get it straight that

I'm supposed to get seven boxes, or 28 injections, because my insurance

company allows for a 34-day supply of meds. When I get it straight with

the special company, they still call it in wrong to the company that

ships it. I go back and forth, back and forth, and I'm getting sick of

it.

And now I have to have a hassle with my rheumy's office to even get the

prescription! I asked why I couldn't get a year's prescription, and the

nurse said because he has to monitor you. Of course he has to, and I

want to be monitored, but if I had a prescription for a year, I

wouldn't run off and forsake the doctor and not come in for my

appointments. I guess they don't trust me? It's utterly ridiculous!

Thanks for letting me vent!

Sue, feeling very frustrated because I'll probably run out of Enbrel

before I get any more!

Good morning ,

I also take Vicodin (Norco 500/325). Everyone thinks this is such a great

pill but like you, it seems like it just takes the edge off. My doc

prescribed Avinza, which is a form of morphine.

Nothing...nothing...nothing... I take it at night, it helps me to sleep, but

as far as the pain, it does nothing. Maybe it would work differently for

you. My suggestion to you is to be honest with your doc and other meds to

see if they help. I wouldn't take more than 4 Vic a day because of the

Acetemetaphin (SP?) in it can be damaging to your liver.

Best of luck with the Orencia. I may have to go that direction as the

Humira/Prednisone combo isn't working anymore. I am having such bad flares

that if I sometimes feel like giving up. But I am going to stick with this

until I'm close to running out of Humira and see how I am by then. I can

understand your fears about new treatment and if you want to let off steam,

feel free to email me.

Take care and good luck. Maybe someone in this Group can share what pain

meds work for them.

Hi :

Yes, you can have medications of any kind loose their

effectiveness, and with pain meds it is no different.

If your doctor is one of the good ones who understands

pain meds, you are lucky. I also had this sort of

trouble, and was taking Ultracet for about 4 years,

finally got to the point that I was taking up to six

or more tablets a day, and still having no real pain

relief. I was switched to Ultram ER 300 that I take

only once a day - it still does not take away the pain

(I have given up on ever having NO pain lol), but it

takes the edge off. When that stops working, I will

ask for another medication. None of us should have to

live in pain.

Does your doctor talk to you about those medications

that can be given by patch so that there is always a

constant level of pain med in your body? That might

be something for you to think about, especially

considering your driving, working and all. I think

some of our members have been on these types of

patches (or maybe it's my fibro group), and have had

good results with them. Just a thought. I hope you

are able to find something that will work for you, and

not cause difficulty in your life by your taking it.

Hi ,

I have tried narcotics and they did nothing for me. Strangely

enough my new rheumy gave me tramadol for my fibro and celebrex for

my RA and it works very well. Some times you have to try different

thngs before you find what works for you and it may not be the

strongest med, just the one that works best for fibromyalgia.

Hello,

I only have fibro and my rheum gave me Ultram 25mg, and Darvocet

N100. Ultram (tramadol) surprisingly helps my persistent butt pain

but not the shoulder pain. Darvocet tones the pain down but doesn't

get rid of it. Left over Vicodin I took made me too itchy that night.

I used to take that. They give you 15 pills for 30 days I believe

and no refills I know. I took one for an interview years ago and

never made it inside to the interview. I was laid out. I was so

sick from the pain medication. Thursday I was given Ultram. I had

forgotten why I stopped taking them in the past after 1 day, but

remembered when it took 2 days for the nausea to wear off with 1 100

mg tablet...oh my! I am still experiencing waves of nausea today from

it...just 1 tablet. I think I am allergic to narcotics. Ha! I know

I am not tolerating these particular ones. As for the pain, nothing.

I am in just as much pain on or off the pain meds. ibuprofen works

better. there has to be a better way. they forgot to do the tb test

b4 scheduling the oriencia so will have to go for tb reading monday

then reschedule the orencia. keep your fingers crossed this actually

brings back some functionality. because i am not very optimistic

about a pain med for relief. I wish. unfortunately prednisone

seems to be the only thing to relief pain. what a shame.

Hi, I take Tylenol #3 for pain. They don,t work very well either. I get about

two hours of less pain and I am only given one every six hours. So the time in

between is hard to take some days. I hope you find the right combination of

meds. Thats what I am hoping for. We just have to keep trying. Betty in Mi.

I was taking Lortab by the handfuls and it still didn't help. Of course,

that was during a time when the Rummy took all my anti-inflammatories away

from me. I went back to my original Rheumy and he put me back on Lodine XL

and MS Contin for pain. It's a narcotic (morphine), so there's a hassle

getting the paperwork right and to me in time each month. If there were

another pain med that would work, I'd take it, but for now, it's gotta be MS

Contin. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

Tramadol helps my " butt " pain but not my shoulder. Menthol patches

help that and Darvocent N helps sometimes.

My history with RA and the Rheumy's I've dealt with has something to do with

my getting the Morphine. The first time I went to my GP and complained about

the pain I was in, he immediately diagnosed me as having RA. As time went

on, I was still in a lot of pain, so he gave me Prednisone. I loved it! The

GP moved on, so I had to find a Rheumy for continued treatment. The one I

found turned out to be a good 'person fixer'. He and I would discuss my case

and the things I found out that he wasn't aware of and other life's

mysteries. He even used me to help teach his student RA docs.

When he moved to private practice, I stayed with the hospital, and the Rummy

that was left, because of my financial situation. I had only Medicare and

the hospital is a state run teaching hospital. Unfortunately, the new Rummy

wouldn't prescribe more than Ultram, which does nothing for me, and he was

quick to pull any med that might make my blood tests differ.

I went back to my original Rheumy because I was to the point that I'd rather

die than continue to put up with that pain I was suffering. That was the

first thing I told the Rheumy, and the second was that even if I got hooked

on a pain med, how bad can it be since I'm 62 and can't really cause a

lasting problem with drug dependency. He immediately gave me a script for

Morphine Sulphate, and I've been on it since. Between it and the

reinstatement of antiinflammatories, I'm back to expecting a good long life,

and living it as such. I was honest and desperate, and told him so, and he

responded properly and promptly. That's the difference between a real Rheumy

and a doctor that just wants to get through life, and I think that's the

difference.

Joy: I would find another rheumy if they do not believe in pain meds. No one

I pretty much agree with you, Pat. It seems to be hard to find a doctor that

will take the liability of ordering powerful drugs. That's the real reason

most Rheumies won't do more than Ultram (read 'candy'). It's a safe move and

they won't have to worry about complications. In the last few years, though,

some doctors are getting the message that it's ok to be aggressive and give

no or a small amount of pain, especially to older patients. That's changing

the thinking of a number of doctors, and Joy, maybe you can convert another

doctor's thinking by reminding him/her of that. I thought that the meds I'm

taking weren't doing any good until I had to do without for almost 2 weeks.

Even though I still have pretty strong pain, the MS Contin is doing a big

job!

Hi Pamela:

Right now I am taking Ultram ER 300 mg. once daily,

having changed from Ultracet which I was taking up to

four to six a day. The Ultram takes the edge off the

pain, but does not take it away. I have given up on

thinking that I will ever be totally painfree again -

as long as I can get enough relief so I can do the

things I need for my family and home, I am good. Pain

of a certain degree is something I think we have to

learn to live with, unfortunately. Take care -
