Alcohol and autism

the use of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs increases the risk of miscarriage, premature delivery, birth deformities, and brain dysfunction such as dyslexia, autism or hyperactivity

Dear Sir,

Thank you for this new information about alcohol as the the cause of autism. There are hundreds of researchers looking for the cause of this mysterious and debilitating disease but you cracked it. I am truly very interested in the studies that confirm this theory. Where did you get your medical degree?

We could use your help to educate people about the early warning signs of autism, early intervention, different therapies and services available. Are you willing to do PSA about thimerosal and autism - to encourage people to ask for thimerosal free shots? Or one about acceptance of people who are otherwise abled? This is the help my community needs not more misinformation (however well meaning) about the cause of autism.

Very truly yours,

E. Brown

Thanks to the SARNET report early this morning, I’m ready

for a cocktail. Note the time, 6:33am! I blogged this article about

alcohol and autism. Another pathetic study. You do subscribe to SARNET,

don’t you? Buy a subscription for your child’s teacher as a

holiday gift. Better than another mug with an apple on it……

There have been many theories in the last few years--folic acid in baked goods,

television,

sonograms, this morning I saw wireless technology--that seemed a little silly,

but logical in

that these things were new or have increased in the last 20 years. But

drinking?! Right,

'cause in the 50s everyone abstained, and then in the 80s and 90s, pregnant

women drank

like fish.

Mark and I joked when I became pregnant with our third that I should

smoke some crack - after all, two clean pregnancies didn't do much for

my kids.

Hi Kim,

Can you be certain that your pregnancies were " clean " ? What about maternal body

burden

for mercury? Or aluminum? Just curious....

Why didnt they just stick to the " refrigerator mother " psychiatric

theory? Noooooo they just cannot help but

come up with a few more lame insults. It STILL amazes me the lengths

they go to take the blame off vaccines and mercury.

None of these studies hold water because they can't be extrapolated to

all or even most effected families. There are tons of things which,

I'm sure, could effect MT functioning and reduce the body's ability to

detoxify metals, whether they're lifestyle choices (which have no

history of sparking an autism epidemic on their own in their heydays),

genetic susceptibility, birth drugs, the tylenol pregnant women are

told to take or the yellow dye in prescription prenatals.

But stress doesn't cause a cold, even if it makes the cold virus

easier to contract, right?

These studies just count on people being ahistorical and having no

idea of lifestyle trends throughout certain periods, just like they

count on people today believing there's always been 1/150 children

with autism, just buried in institutions and people's attics. If

smoking and drinking in pregnancy caused autism, then the epidemic

would have begun in force in urban Europe in the 1920's, would have

hit a peak in the fifties and sixties and would now be in decline and

almost nonexistent among the offspring of college-educated mothers.

You are not responsible for those. I

have a friend whose son is now pretty high functioning, enough to figure out

how to change his birth date to look old enough to purchase things

online. He bought a Lexus last year!! LOL! And then a warrenty on a

different car. They call to confirm billing and sometimes just send it in

the mail without any payment until it arrives (she gets these almost daily).

This mom sends everything back claiming he was not old enough to purchase and

then is not responsible for anything. Unless of course your son is

stealing you cc info then you don’t have to pay a thing….Still it

must be great that he learned to do such a thing!! -

This is a murder trial and the defense will ceaseless try to

create " reasonable doubt " .

I figure it's like OJ with the theory that 's nonexistant " drug

connections " bumped her off, not him. Note how the theory redirects

blame and attempts to taint the characters of the victims. Very

important in defense strategy. And OJ offering a reward for anyone

with information leading to the arrest of these invisible murderous

ninja drug dealers is like all the money the pharmaceutical companies

throw at genetic research.

I can't help but laugh. I had become a Christian 18 months prior to

Allie's conception. I think I had 1 beer during that time prior to

conception. No alcohol of any sort throughout the pregnancy. I had a

couple of glasses of wine when she was a few months old & pumped my

breasts for hours to make sure she didn't get anything from it.

So now Allie has autism because I was old (28 when she was born),

because I was a lush (never drank), because I'm a geek & married to

one (well, they may have me there), and because I watch too much

television (about 1-2 hrs/daily split up throughout the day).

I agree, this study smells like something all right...

I know someone who drank like a fish while pregnant. Developed

gestational diabetes & quit going to the doctor the last 3 mos of her

pregnancy 'cause she didn't wanna be bothered with all the insulin,

diet, etc. Smoked, too. Her son was 8 lbs. Healthy as a horse. He's

now 14, out performs all the kids in his class, absolutely no behavior

problems. He's about as close to a perfect kid as you can get.

one interesting thing though, she was " negligent " on getting his

vaccines. I don't know how old he was before he got his first ones,

probably a few yrs old.

My friend just said it got ridicules and

just stopped accepting the deliveries. She yells at the sales people who

call saying “Do you realize you just sold a car over the internet to a 9

year old child with Autism???” They try and hold her responsible

but she tells them she has a 15year old Volvo and is a single mother with 3

kids no amount of persuading could get her to afford a lexus…They have no

leg to stand on so you don’t have to accept anything your son orders no

matter how pushy they are.

My problem is my ASD son’s new

fascination with You-tube he keeps going into google history and clicking on Sesame Street or boobah,

etc and clicks on these videos with the same name in the title but some of them

are Xrated or psychedelic Boobah tripping. Now I’m going to have to

put a block on You-tube which wouldn’t be so bad except for the fact that

we only have one computer! I don’t know if I’ll ever look at

Elmo the same way again after catching some of these videos….-

I think it's scientific defamation, scientific name-calling, yep. It

would be great to see a precedent lawsuit.

That is what it's like, isn't it? It's like getting kidney punched

over and over again. First whallop my kids on the head with a branding

iron and then call us all names.

This is one case where having one's credit destroyed over autism can

be a plus. If any of my kids tried to buy one off our's, they'd laugh

us off the net.
