Dr Myhill has written about this, too:

http://www.drmyhill.co.uk/wiki/Magnesium_and_B12_Injections_-_what_to_do_if_your\

_GP_refuses_to_give

This is a real bore. Magnesium and B12 injections are so helpful that it is

pointless progressing onto other things without trying these first. Therefore a

way must be found to get this done. Some GPs are unwilling to prescribe the

magnesium and B12 but prepared to inject them. In this event I can supply the

magnesium and B12 and the GP's practice nurse should be able to inject (but you

need to be a patient of mine first!).

The next possibility is that the GP refuses to have anything to do with

magnesium and B12 injections. In this event either you need to find a local

nurse, physio, health visitor or mid-wife or whoever who can do the injections

for you. I am very happy to write a covering letter so that I take clinical

responsibility, send that person instructions as to how to inject B12 and

magnesium and I can supply the wherewithal.

The third possibility is that I teach you to inject yourself. This has great

advantages because the timing of the magnesium and B12 depends on your clinical

symptoms. Some people know exactly how long the injections last and if they are

going through a good phase they last longer, shorter with a bad phase. Sometimes

more benefit is got from the B12 than magnesium or vice-versa and the injections

can be adjusted accordingly. However, you really need to come and see me so that

I can teach you to inject yourself, or alternatively be taught by a competent

local practitioner such as a doctor or nurse. Many of my patients do end up

injecting themselves simply because this saves the effort of travelling down to

their GP's surgery on a regular basis and the risk of picking up nasty

infections in the waiting room.

The fourth possibility is to try magnesium by nebuliser. This I have been trying

for several years now with reasonably good results in some patients - Magnesium

by nebuliser.

I now have a preparation of B12 which delivers 5,000mcgms (ie ten times the dose

in a ½ml injection) as a sublingual spray, but even with perfect B12 absorption

one can only expect 1% to actually get through the gut wall!. The idea of the

sublingual spray is that some is absorbed under the tongue. It works well for

some people, but many CFSs tell me that the injections are irreplaceable! It

costs approx £22 for 60 doses (nearly 3 months supply). If you e-mail our

dispensers, they can confirm the exact cost and send you the spray.

I had a series of infusions of magnesium, B12 and glutathione at a private

doctor's in Bristol. I can't say I experienced any improvements from it

however, and it was very expensive.

Hi  good luck with the Haem appointment.

Experiences with Bloods and Haematology ranges over 3 years. Never would I taken

any supplement without the Haematologist advice. If I could turn the clock back

I would. As I feel so much better for taking advice from the list.

In February I had a Tg (thyroglobulin), FBC (full blood count) and iron panel

blood tests done at the main city hospital.

In May the Endo wrote to me with Tg. (Thyroglobulin) results and noted a high

MCV (mean corpusle volume) shown up in the FBC (February blood tests) He

advised Folate and Vit B12 blood tests be checked. I added both these along

with TFT's  calcium FBC and Ferritin that was nessessary for a Haematology

appointment that was due.

Bloods results were TSH had risen, T4 had fallen, Calcium, Folate and Vit

B12 were all low.

Phoned the Endo and he suggested the GP to script  Adcal D3 and Folic Acid. For

Vit B12 I self medicated with supplements Sheila advised Solgar Vit B12

sublingual 2000mcg to boost levels which are now top of the range. Thank you

Sheila!

Have you had your Folate and Ferritin levels checked? If not why don't you do

have them done as well.

Jaki

More then. Did you feel good of solgar b12 and could you tell the difference in

yourself ? IHave bought the vit b complex to try from solgar but can not take

this until after birth. I have also been looking at b12 for a strong version

Hi Sheila

I've asked the secretary and she asked the haematologist and he said no as that

will no give a true reflection on if I Am deficient or not as they may correct

themself so if the levels did correct themselves then what is no poit in going

to see him.

Thanks rachel

Hello Sorry for

the delay in replying. I didn't realise you were pregnant.. congratulations!! In a nutshell YES I felt the benefits of Solgar Vitamin B12 supplements. Levels fell from 553 to 383 (150 - 900) and this was after a three month course of Vit B12 from Holland and Barratt. Sheila's advice of Solgar sublingual 2000 to begin with and there after 1000 was brilliant! Folate was 2.8 (3.2 - 13.9) GP scripted Folic Acid 5mg on Endo's request and this had an immediate effect as levels rose to 14 and recent levels are >24. I can't convey to you the difference is my well being as it's immeasurable... but I must say your Ferritin levels are Low! Complications? I have HH (haemochromatosis) HIGH levels of Ferritin (stored iron) Treatment is weekly / fortnight venesections (blood letting) or as is tolerable and until Ferritin is at a level lower than the reference range. I certainly wouldn't want my Ferritin to be as low as 11. Iron replacement is nessassary to replete your iron stores... Unless

there is no other health issues I cannot see that supplementing would be of any harm to you... As to the Haematologist be a good listener and ask all the questions needed for you to understand. I made that mistake. Stand firm... Jaki

Why can't you take the Solgar B12 until after the pregnancy

? I cannot see that starting this would cause any harm, but I will stand

by being corrected.

Hi jackie

Thank you very much for your reply, thank you I am 39 weeks on Sunday So not

far now and very excited, i have lewrnt a tremendous amount about being hypo

from sheilatoms since being pregnant even ho ice been on Meda for ten years when

really I knew nothing. my b12 levels really worried me as they are way under he

range so I'm hoping the haematologist will be able to help. May I ask did the

haematologist advise you to have vitamin injections or just a supplement ? The

solgar 2000 is that the spray one as I've been looking into that one but just

holding off till me app on Monday. I know they won't treat me as I'm pregnant

even though it's a reason to treat me but I think they are going to ask me to

cone back 6 weeks after birth so they can retest me again. Which I will fight as

surly they can't leaf me that long feeling so rubbish. May j ask how long it

took your levels to come up ?

I have started my iron tablet I normally take my latest dose of t3 at 4pm then

take iron at 6pm but last night I took it later and I noticed a huge diff today

I thought it was only t4 Meds I had to watch out for but I think t3 has To be

taken at least 6 hours apart too, gosh so Many things to watch out for.

Thanks

Hi

I don't know anything about b12 and pregnancy so it's best to be sure it's ok to

take b12 by asking your doctor. when do you give birth?

There are various ways of getting b12, including patches:

http://www.dennisthechemist.com/b12-patch-p514123.html

sublingual nuggts (these got my b12 up from about 390 to 600 - you just put

these under your tongue or between your cheek and gums and they dissolve :

http://www.revital.co.uk/Solgar_Vitamin_B_12_3

and sprays

but i have not used the sprays - i think this is an example of a srpay :

Lots of different options on here:

Hi Sally, I've stumbled upon The Pernicious Anaemia Society web site where a Methylcobalamin Infusion Clinic in Ashford, Kent in the U.K. on Friday 11th November.

The clinic will take place in the afternoon of the 11th.If you are interested in having this alternative treatment please discuss this with your doctor first.Dr. R can be contacted on 01656 646815This news story was published on 2nd November 2011

I don't know whether the timescale is a bit tight for enlistment, but as you can see, it was only posted on 2nd November.

Where can you go privately for B12 infusion?> > > Lilian> > >  Went privately for a B12 infusion - and it made SUCH a difference. From the same source I buy a vial of Methylcobalamin, cost about £50, it lasts ages, inject weekly. No worries about overdose - you know if you are having too much as you pee pink!!!!. If you need to go down the self injection route you will need to get a sharps box and arrange for disposal. Injection can be done sub cutaneously >

I have pernicious anaemia and have B12 shots, but one every 12 weeks.   So to supplement it I have bought the patches.    However I cannot tell how well, if at all, they are working. However, they have patches for HRT and nicotine etc. so patches must work.    Perhaps a trial would be the best thing and see if you feel any different.

I have got mine from BIOVIA.Lilian
