> hello, brief history, im a 37 year old male, at the age of 16 they discovered

i had a dysfunctional kidney which got worse and stopped working in 2000 at 26,i

got septacemia and had it removed,6 months later i developed type 1

diabetes, they said as a result of the septacemia your organs can start to shut

down and the pancreas is often affected. i went on insulin but never really felt

right,i started getting lots of symptoms all associated with with

hypothyroidism.

> about a year later, after much complaining to my doctor that i didnt feel

right,he gave me a blood test, my tsh was 2.5 which he said was worrying but i

had to be outside 5.0 to be treated. after 3 years of it going

2.8,3.2,3.8,4.1,4.5 and evetually 5.5 i got on levothyroxine after putting on 3

stone, suffering from depression, having previously being hyperactive to having

zero energy...i was expecting miracles...nothing happened..my symptoms persisted

and my hair started falling out. a manged to lose 2 stone after going on the

dafne course for diabetes.

> since then my hairloss has continued as have my symptoms, especially stomach

problems and muscle aches have continued. 2 years ago they said i had high blood

pressure and started me on ramipril as they noticed my remaining kidney function

had dropped (that has since got a bit better) but thats more down to better

blood sugar control after dafne.

> ok, so that last 6 months my hair has started really falling out rapidly and

my stomach problems have got much worse, they are saying ive got extreme ibs and

they are going to test me for celiac, thay are also going to test my prostate as

im getting lower abdominal pain when urinating and getting a weak flow. it was

because of all this that i started looking on the net and there you go as soon

as i typed it in..synthroid and hairloss was all over the net as was ramipril

and hairloss ans also much more about synthroid being poor.

> i have an appointment with my endocronologist on tuesday (dr M*****)

> and id like to have more info about going on T3 and getting off ramipril. they

do not do non synthroid over here do they? (im in essex, england) but i heard

they do thioronine, dont know if i spelled that correctly, would that help with

synthroid? im getting terribly depressed about the hairloss,in the last 3 weeks

is falling out more than ever, really noticably and my stomach is worse. i had a

full set of blood works done 2 weeks ago for my appointment, is there anything i

should look for to help? sorry for the long message but i needed to get it all

out there, any help would really be appreciated as im at my wits end, many many

thanks

>

also id like to add that im on 100mcg of levothyroxine and 2.5g of ramipril, ive

been on 150mcg of levothyroxine but was getting heart flutters so lowered it to

100 and they have stopped, thank you

thank you soooo much sheila, that was a great respone and more than i could hope

for, i will look into all the things you have said on here, i just posted an new

post before i saw this response about my blood test results, my endocrinologist

is a diabteic specialist and maybe he doesnt have the required knowledge,it was

a gp who has now retired by the way that made me suffer all those years :-(

> i would like to go on t3 as well as t4 i think, it is said that levothyroxine

causes hairloss..do you think that is just because of the lack of t3 or is the

drug itself causing this? if i went on t3 too maybe it would stop it? im getting

very down about it at the mo.i would love to come off the ramipril,it is said

that all ace inhibiters cause hairloss, im wondering if the reason i have high

blood pressure and im on ramipril again is a result of a lack of t3? its very

frustrating isnt it,the trouble is you start getting used to all the symptoms

and forget what is was ever like to feel normal.

Hi Jeff, You really have been through the mill haven't you. Now you have a diagnosis of hypothyroidism and are taking levothyroxine T4? how much? doc have a horrible tendency to underprescribe. a dose of 150mcg is often considered to be average, but some folk do take muck more to alleviate symptoms. I suggest this as a starting point as docs arevery reluctant to prescribe liothyronine T3. They will use to TSH to titrate the dose instead of listening to the patient's symptoms- believe me you are not going to explode if yourTSH is supressed!! Ramipril- I assume you are taking it for high blood pressure? nasty stuff, gave me an intractable cough. I successfully reduced my BP by taking magnesium supplements and am also taking a herbel med, but won't comment as I've not been back to check BP since I started taking it. I suspect that if you can get your thyroid treat4d correctly then the majority of you symptoms will improve/dissapear- mine did, but you may have to go private or at a last resort go it alone to get there the NHS is not very good at treating thyroid disorders properly. Low tetosterone can cuase all sorts of problems health wise- have they checked that yet? but then high tetosterone can cause hair loss too- life's not fair is it!! hair loss can also be caused by low T3, try to get that tested, but NHS is reluctant to do it so you may have to get private test- see files for labs. regarding the diabetes have a search for chromium I believe there is a connection > thyroid treatment > From: jeff420@...> Date: Fri, 3 Dec 2010 11:12:35 +0000> Subject: massive hair loss on synthroid and ramipril, help please> > MODERATED TO REMOVE DOCTORS NAME. There

appears to be many reasons for hairloss Jeff, not just using levothyroxine.

Many people with hypothyroid symptoms start to lose their hair before starting

thyroid hormone replacement. Hair loss can be related to both low and high ferritin

levels (get this tested), failing hormone levels, androgenetic alopecia, hypothyroidism,

ringworm, fungal infections, certain medications such as blood thinners, gout

medication, birth control pills and too much vitamin A can cause sudden or

abnormal hair loss as can following a crash diet, sudden hormonal changes,

chemotherapy and radiation. Emotional stress or surgery can also cause our hair

to fall out and is usually not noticed until 3-4 months after the stressful

event has taken place. Stress can cause a slowing of new hair growth because a

larger number of hair follicles enter into the resting phase and no new hair

growth is experienced. However, you need to find the true cause and perhaps you

should visit a trichologist as hair loss may be the early warning sign of a

more serious disorder such as lupus or diabetes. Make an appointment to see

your doctor specifically about this Jeff - but I think it is more likely that

in your particular case, the cause of your hair loss could be Ramipril. Read

about Ramipril and hair loss here http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Effects-of-Ramipril-and-Hair-Loss & id=514963

Is there a chance there is another BP medication with less side effects?

My

husband had high BP and a doctor told me to get him to take high dose Niacin

(vitamin B3) i.e. 350mgs daily and also high dose Co-EnzymeQ10 300mgs daily. He

has also added Mukta vati http://www.muktavati.com/main.html

which many people have found works brilliantly in bringing down high BP. All of

these are natural products. However, with the Niacin, this causes flushing which

can make your body tingle and go red which lasts for about half an hour. Don't

be tempted to take the non-flushing as it doesn't work the same. My husband

learned to take his Niacin with food or immediately after food and didn't get

this flushing. You learn to take it after food when you don't have to go out

anywhere.

Luv
