???

I've been taking selenium for quite a while now, 400 mg. daily, eat lots of eggs, love Brazil nuts, have never noticed any negative effects/garlic breath....

Thanks Bruce, I've tested my sons PH with urine strips and usually it's in the

6's which I know is too low. But it's usually based on what they've eaten, one

child I can get to eat good, but the other, the one in question, doesn't eat

good and actually loves red meat which will put the body in an acid state. So,

will supplements alone with a half ideal diet correct the PH?

He is a picky eater and has to be forced to eat good foods.

Interesting that you describe

garlic breath. In my family and other’s we are close to that I can ask

without offending, when we get what I call pickle breath – smells like

they just ate 2-3 big kosher dills, and they haven’t – it is a precursor

to a sinus infection. My husband, before he found out all his allergies, would

get a sinus infection every other month like clockwork. I finally noticed that

the day before he got one, his breath smelled like pickles. Since he has dealt

with his allergies, he doesn’t get infections often, but every once in a

while he has that smell, and I immediately tell him, and we do preventative

treatment, and he doesn’t get them, I think because he caught them in

advance.

Maybe this is the same type of

thing, since pickles have lots of garlic anyway, and they are fighting something.

My 7yo had a garlic breath on Sunday and then

my 10yo had a garlic breath today. So, I went online to search about garlic

breath symptoms and selenium came up. Well, since starting the iodine, I've

been giving selenium with the iodine.

Which form of Selenium are you using? I think the Selenite form may

build up more quickly than the organic form. Is it possible that you've

got good levels of selenium already in the foods that you're eating?

Does the supplement smell bad to them - it seems to be one of the

supplements that as you reach good levels in the body the smell gets

stronger to you - hard to describe, but sort of snot-like, heading into

the garlic range. Do they have any other symptoms indicating that their

levels are going too high?

I would ask them to smell the supplement before dosing and only give it

if they can't smell it, or it smells pleasant to them. The other thing

to work on would be why it is building up in the body instead of being

used up - probably need a biochemistry class for that.

What form of selenium is it? l-selenomethonine or some other form of inorganic

selenium?

Well, there are four of us in my family who recently learned

that our ferritin levels are low. Doctor noted the deficiency (severe in

one case and moderate in three) and did nothing about it. So we are on

our own. I’m not going to ignore something that has one of my

daughters blacking out just because my doctor chooses to ignore it. I

asked him about low iron possibly being the cause of several of her problems a

year ago and he gave me a song and dance about getting enough sleep (she has

insomnia and sleeps very lightly), eating well and drinking enough water.

While I appreciate the approach that does not rush to write a prescription, I

don’t appreciate that he ignored my suspicion and my daughter was undiagnosed

for a year because of it. Now that she is diagnosed, as I expected, he’s

doing nothing about it. So I will be taking things in my own hands and

working on building up her ferritin levels myself. At least I know he

will order the tests I want (finally) so I will monitor every month or so until

I see what’s happening.

What do you mean by “true condition”? What’s

scary about iron supplementation? Just about anything can be overdone

with serious consequences.

Heck, I'm male, so it's unlikely.

If a true condition were to occur, I'd be under medical supervision

for it.

Look it up, it's scary. Not to be trifled with.

Low iron is often associated with Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance. They haven't figured out why yet. I got mine back up via cooking in my grandmother's cast iron cookware. I still have to supplement vitamin B 12 and folic acid though as they are essential to process the iron. Just something to think about. There is a connection between thyroid issues and gluten issues. I suffer from Polycythemia Vera, and for at least 5 years now I have undergone

frequent bloodlettings (phlebotomies, to use the proper technical jargon) in

order to attempt to periodically normalize my out of control bone marrows

prodigious production of blood cells, and bring my blood thickness (cells vs.

fluid volume) down so I don't have blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, etc....

Since I get blood removed sometimes at the rate of a pint every 2 weeks, I

probably don't have much iron left at all. In fact, since iron is a prime

requirement in order for the bone marrow to produce red blood cells, and since

one object of my treatment (phlebotomy) is to reduce their production, for me it

is actually highly desirable that I remain in a constant state of major iron

deficiency.

It is l-selenomethionine. Country Life, 100 mcg. I responded the other day to

your post, but was reading the responses and see that mine didn't post.

The more common reason for 98% apparent saturation rate is the false high

reading caused by high bromide readings. This is covered in the New Member

Document.

Dr Brownstein does not say these things in his Iodine book (about not

starting iodine until minerals are clinically balanced, being supervised,

etc.), which was recently revised so the book reflects his most current

thinking.

There are other instances of Dr Brownstein articles out on the web that

were written before he knew what he knows now. I do not believe that he

still thinks the same way, and I'd be willing to bet that article (which is

not dated) was written a while back.

http://www.vrp.com/minerals/iodine-the-rest-of-the-story in this article that Bruce referenced Dr. B states that in his 2nd edition.... The Iodine book is in the 4th edition now. His 2nd edition is dated 2006. I don't think he balances nutrients first anymore. He just started me on all the things I needed along with iodoral and off we went.

Here are more articles on Iodine. This is the professional website of VRP.
